Chapter 14—Fey with your Friends

I drove to the cabin, and before doing anything else, my first task was to keep a promise to Preacher Jon. Replaying the discussion in my head, he was reasonable. First, it’d be a quick jaunt to the pole to take over the circle. I didn’t have access to the spell to control the territory, but I could take over the pole and Old Donnie’s spell.

Holding the rose from Nicole, I headed down the dirt road. The ground packed in over years of weather and not heavy use, and it felt good on my bare feet. White pines behind Virginia pines created a stadium seating pattern and told me I was close. The pole was off the roadway and hidden in thick brush at the bottom of mounds, all of which were hidden between trees. To take it over, I created a small circle around the pole.

I initialized the circle and saw it was empty. Old Donnie was gone, but something told me the Earth hadn’t given up on him. There was just no proof.

I took ownership of the pole using my circle. Soon, my senses changed and I could experience everything supernatural and unnatural in my lands. The input overwhelmed me. I knew everything that walked in my lands, where and what was the intent. Well, not everything, just the unnatural and natural. I knew where every animal was, and if it was in distress or not, and whether the distress was natural. Blessedly, I could shut it off.

Then, I prepared a large circle around it. Around Atlanta, I kept about a dozen unused circles. I had one at the cabin, one at each house, one on our test area at the store. There was one on the nature trail, two in Stone Mountain Park, two on the silver comet trail, one in Piedmont Park, one on the Georgia Tech Campus, and one in Centennial Park. I added this new circle to my repertoire for emergency circles.

That done, I grabbed my waist pack and eighty-pound pack and sniffed the rose. This all started when I caught Nicole lying to me. I was barefoot and thinking clearly. Nicole was the only one who had access to my car, other than Rachel, when the Magnolia seed pod went missing. It couldn’t be her... with her ability to detect emotions, thoughts, and lie. Oh no.

But why would she have done the gift earlier today? Even connected to Earth, nothing made sense. This is a time I wish I was smarter.

I got into my car and drove a few hours east into the mountains and found a good place to park. I planned to spend two nights in the mountains, so time was on my side. A tree fell and blocked a path and stream, which was ruining protected wildlife. I plugged the coordinates into my handheld gps and it said I had twelve hours of hiking and recommended two days. Because of my Earth Domain, if I was barefoot, my speed in the woods was incredible.
